Lake Katherine · Palos Heights, IL

In 1988, Lake Katherine Nature Center & Botanical Gardens was created to bring a beautiful outlet of recreation to the Chicago suburb, Palos Heights. A mile long trail borders a man made lake, built of retain storm water before it flows into the Calumet-Saganashkee (Cal-Sag) Channel.
This year, the gardens are celebrating their 25th anniversary.
Year round, they offer adult nature classes (the Ecology of Coffee is at the top of my list), host school field trips, and frequent nature walks. There is a children's and a butterfly garden. The Nature Center has a ballroom and a clubhouse where weddings and special events are hosted.
Regardless of the circumstances, Lake Katherine holds a nostalgic place in my heart and it's such a treasure on the south side that I will continue visiting as often as possible.
